Let Them Lego!

Ethan is really getting into legos lately. They are also making their way into every piece of flooring in the house. We’ve had the larger legos (Duplos) for a while but recently the kids are spending more time building houses, towers, cities, “California-Chicagos” (A combo of Ethan’s two favorite vaca destinations?!), and superhero scenes. I anticipate lego collections will begin to overtake playtime and it’s really cute to see the boyish transition.
To prepare, I set out to find a lego table or the like. John suggested it as a 5th birthday present for Ethan but once looking online, the options looked a bit spendy. After browsing for about 15 minutes, I convinced myself that yes, a $500 table for LEGOS?! is perfectly acceptable.
Wait, nope. It’s not. The search continued for a better plan. Thanks to some over-the-top crafty blogger, I found a solution: table top lego base. Basically you buy the lego brand bases upon which the scenes will be built and glue them to a wooden board. (They are really flimsy!) I was up to the challenge and dragged the kids through home depot this morning. No less than 25 men asked me if I needed help and one 70 year old customer asked what I was making. I guess a Mom with two little kids isn’t a common sight in the commercial wood aisle?? Once I said “a lego base” his eyes glazed over but he was really sweet. Oh happy day to find a wooden board that has a dry-erase whiteboard on the opposite side. Score! Two activities in one. I found some 1″ molding to frame the board, wood glue, and wood stain. For $25 I was able to build this fun tabletop base and Ethan loved playing with it tonight. The large and small lego kits are compatible too! It fits perfectly onto the table Susie gave the boys. No more legos on the ground!! Yipee!
