First Fillings=Success

Last week, the dentist asked if he eats anything gummy-gummy vitamins, fruit snacks?-ummm…Me aka totally embarrassed Mom: “fruit snacks”. Dentist: “Toss them, they destroy teeth.” Done! NO more fruit snacks.

Here he is, pre-sedation.

I was SO proud of Ethan today! He did amazing. We had talked a lot about what to expect. He was excited for his prizes and popsicle which he knew would come at the end. We played games in the game room (waiting room) before heading back for the sedation administration. It was an oral liquid squeezed from a syringe. Eeek. He wasn’t a fan. This was the only hard part of the appointment. We ended up having to lay him down in our laps to get him to drink it down. He spit it out a few times but ended up finishing it. Phew! We went to pick out a prize and went into their Pillow Room-a dimly lit room filled with plush pillows and stuffed animals.

It’s where he was supposed to settle down. Mmm hmmm. They said he would be loopy and to help him go to the bathroom, etc. He was totally fine the entire time! Hardly seemed sedated. I was nervous he wasn’t going to be calm enough! When time came for the gals to take him back, he thankfully calmly walked with them while I waited in the lobby. After about 45 min, the nurses told me he was all done and that he did awesome. A nurse carried him out with his popsicle and prizes in hand. He got a little weepy and said “I can’t talk” (his lower lip and chin were still numb). The nurse said he did great and that they were able to get it all taken care of-thank you, laughing gas! He was saying things like “they painted my teeth” which I am guessing is what they were telling him was happening. He peacefully finished his popsicle on the ride home. I was waiting for him to get nauseated but he was fine. I was SO darn proud of him. What could have been a traumatizing experience turned out to be a really good morning. The practice is amazing and perfectly caters to children. That really helps!

In true Ethan fashion, he defied the rules of sedation. He’s unstoppable. The nurses warned me over and over about how I need to watch him back at home. Wake him every half hour to hydrate him, make sure his chin is up when he falls asleep…he may be dazed. When we got home he laid down on the sofa for maybe 15 minutes, fell asleep for 5…and was back to leaping and bouncing all over the place. I tried to keep him sitting and resting. Nope. Totally normal Ethan, which is good. He did great. It would have been nice if Tyler napped but he’s keen on escaping at the moment. So both boys were partners in crime all day.

Dentist visit, check. Good thing we don’t have to go back for another year. 🙂
